April 2009

The Sugar Bureau re-launched its website this month with a strong message that sugar forms a useful part of a healthy balanced diet. The site provides the scientific evidence about the role of sugars in health and disease.

We have introduced a new Science Centre where you can access the latest evidence on the role of sugar in nutrition and health, with topics including obesity and hyperactivity, and articles on the major lifestyle diseases’ said Dr. Alison Boyd, Director of The Sugar Bureau. ‘It shows the industry’s commitment to a healthy lifestyle’ she added.

Anne de Looy Professor of Dietetics and Head of the School of Health Professions at the University of Plymouth said ‘It has a great deal of well informed information that health professionals may need to support their understanding of nutrition and diet’.

The topical papers in Nutrition In Practice and the previous editions are very helpful and easy to locate.  This web-site continues to be a very valuable resource for us’ added Professor de Looy.

The Sugar Bureau was established in 1964 and is the trade association for the UK sugar industry. Its aim is to improve knowledge and understanding about the contributions of sugar and other carbohydrates to a healthy balanced diet.

The re-launched website features a regular nutrition information bulletin for health professionals, leaflets on looking after your teeth and healthy lifestyle, summaries of recent scientific research papers, and original consumer articles for journalists.

Questions such as ‘won’t sugar make me fat?’ are dealt with by providing an explanation supported by the science. The site gives information on dieting, tips to stay slim and how to keep active and all information provided is supported by the latest scientific references from academics worldwide. Background information

  • Sugar is the naturally-occurring nutrient that makes food taste sweet. It is a carbohydrate along with starch. Carbohydrates are our main source of energy. Starch-rich foods include bread, rice, pasta, and potatoes, whereas sugars are found in fruit and vegetables, honey, jam and many soft drinks.
  • Like all carbohydrates, sugar provides energy. Carbohydrate is the preferred fuel for working muscles. Not eating enough carbohydrate makes it difficult to be physically active and can make us feel sluggish.
  • Nutrition experts currently recommend being physically active, cutting back on fat and eating more carbohydrates as the best strategy for weight loss. One of the first items some dieters remove from their diet is sugar. Research, however, shows that people can continue to enjoy some sugary foods and still lose weight. In fact, eating sugar may increase their chances of success.
