Who We Are

Our staff includes degree-qualified nutritionists, and we liaise regularly with academics and health professional organisations both in the UK and around the world.

Alison Boyd  PhD, BSc, RD, RNutr

Alison was educated at the University of Ulster Coleraine where she gained a BSc (Human Nutrition with Dietetics) and PhD in Nutrition and Diabetes. Her research focused specifically on clinical and experimental studies related to the pathophysiology of the disease.  She was then appointed Senior Dietitian in the Royal Hospitals Belfast, carrying out clinical duties for four years. In 2001, she took up the post of Research Director at The Sugar Bureau where she headed an active Research Programme, funding scientific research in areas such as obesity, diabetes and public health-related issues both in academic institutions and in NHS trusts throughout the UK. In 2007, Alison was appointed Director of The Sugar Bureau. Alison is a member of the British Dietetic Association, Nutrition Society, European Association for the Study of Diabetes and Diabetes UK. She sits on the Industrial Scientists Committee of the British Nutrition Foundation and the Scientific and Communications Committee of the World Sugar Research Organisation.

   

Mary Harrington,  PhD

Mary graduated from University College Cork, Ireland with a BSc in Nutritional Sciences and continued her studies with a PhD in the same area, focusing on optimal nutrition towards osteoporosis prevention. She worked as a postdoctoral fellow in the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH), Zurich where she collaborated on food fortification projects in developing countries. Mary then joined the World Sugar Research Organisation where she was involved in a wide range of lobbying and scientific activities related to sugar, nutrition and health including WHO, FAO and Codex issues. In April 2008, she joined The Sugar Bureau team as the Nutrition Communications Manager. Her role is to oversee the communication of nutrition in relation to sugar and health, to the media, health professionals and consumers.

   

 

What We Do

Research

The Sugar Bureau continuously monitors developments in nutritional science published in international scientific journals. Our extensive database contains information on a wide range of topics, from dental health to weight control and dietary guidelines. The Sugar Bureau also funds scientific research in academic institutions throughout the UK.

Communication

This website provides science-based information on all aspects of sugar and health, as well as other nutritional topics.

Education

The Sugar Bureau is committed to providing up-to-date information on nutritional issues to health professionals. Nutrition in Practice covers a range of nutrition topics of interest to dietitians, GPs, nurses, health visitors and the Dental Team. NIP is provided to UK and Ireland health professionals free of charge, twice a year, on request, or you can opt to receive an e-copy instead. A number of patient leaflets are also available to download for health professionals to use with their patients including: Growing up with Healthy Teeth, Losing Weight and Keeping it Off, Looking Good, Feeling Great, Looking After Your Baby's Teeth and Food and Fitness for School Aged Children.

Government Liaison

The Sugar Bureau liaises with government on issues relating to diet and health when required.
