Dietary Sugars Intake and Cardiovascular Health. A Scientific Statement from the American Heart Association

Objective Assess evidence that excessive intake of added sugars influences CVD risk.

Design Narrative review.

Setting Committee deliberations. 

Participants American Heart Association Nutrition Committee of the Council on Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Metabolism and the Council on Epidemiology and Prevention.

Main outcome measures Quantitative calculation of level of added sugars considered excessive.

Results Prudent upper limit of intake of energy from added sugars suggested for men as 105 calories per day and 100 calories per day for women.

Conclusions Consumption of added sugars by American adults is excessive.
