Dietary Glycemic Load and Gastric Cancer Risk in Italy

Bertuccio P et al.
British Journal of Cancer 2009; 100: 558-561

A case-control study of the risk of gastric cancer in relation to GI and GL.  Subjects were 230 cases and 547 controls.  Subjects’ usual diet during the two years before diagnosis or hospital admission (for controls) was assessed through a validated FFQ.  The OR for the highest vs. the lowest intake of GI was 1.9 (95% CI 1.0-3.3, P for trend = 0.083).  For GL, the OR was 2.5 (95% CI 1.3-4.9, P for trend = 0.003).  Further analysis considered the combined effect of fruits/vegetable intake and GL on gastric cancer risk.  Compared with subjects reporting low GL and high fruits/vegetables consumption, the OR for those reporting high GL and low fruits/vegetables intake was 5.0 (95% CI 2.2-11.5).
